The stock market crash in 1929 and the following Depression affected styles of both clothing and jewelry dramatically. Jewelry was, of course, impacted, being a luxury item. Platinum and diamonds were as prevalent, although they were definitely still popular to those that could afford them.
Yellow gold became more popular across the country. Hemlines lowered, with mid-length skirts becoming the widespread fashion. Hollywood was an escape from the economic times and was one area where full-on glamour only increased in the 1930s. Instead of dark femme fatales like Theda Bara and Louise Brooks, platinum blonde starlets began to reign on the silver screen. Mae West and Jean Harlow exemplified this high-maintenance hair style and also were often outfitted in elaborate floor-length gowns and an immense amount of diamonds.
The advent of World War II was the final blow for Art Deco’s popularity. Metal shortages during the war made platinum and gold much less available. This era saw a rise in popularity in rose gold, with the pure gold being mixed with copper. Mixing metals became a trend, especially two-toned jewelry with yellow and rose gold.
Diamond rings were still being designed and created, but the intricate geometry of Art Deco had faded. Blockier, larger, more modern designs took its place as the country moved from Art Deco into retro and midcentury styled jewelry.
Literal design started to become more popular; instead of a stylized flower, jewelry more often resembled an actual flower. Starting in the 1930s and into the 1940s, many jewelry had whimsical feel about them, as well. Bows, flowers and insects were popular motifs, especially in brooches. One trend was to have bracelets or ring look like belts, and many even had functional buckles like this Retro Ruby and Diamond Ring!

Art Deco’s heyday may have passed us by a little too quickly, but in recent years a revival has occurred with many beautiful new Deco-inspired jewelry styles making a comeback onto the scene- we can only hope these gorgeous designs from years past are finally here to stay, like this Deco-inspired rose and white gold diamond engagement ring featuring a to die for Asscher cut center diamond from Adiamor.
