The Great Gatsby Inspires Art Deco Trend in Engagement Rings

by Craig

Since the recent release of Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby, there has been a rise in the popularity of vintage jewelry from the 1920’s, particularly engagement rings. The breathtaking jewelry seen in the film captures the art deco movement to a tee.  As we know, this monumental art movement is characterized by bold geometric angles, shapes, as well as color.

Among the stunning pieces featured in The Great Gatsby is the engagement ring worn by Carey Mulligan’s character, Daisy Buchanan. She wears a stunning round halo pave set ring with a cushion cut center diamond.  The art deco motif is further echoed with “V” shaped lines stretching down each side of the wedding and engagement band, drawing even more attention to the center diamond.

For brides-to-be who desire a similar effect, we recommend looking at engagement rings and stones with a more angular structure.  The repetition of strong lines in both the stone and the setting will help create that bold silhouette characteristic of the art deco period.

Another reason that many people are so drawn to art deco is its emphasis on luxury.  One technique that was developed during this era and greatly contributed to this air of glamour was French set diamonds.  A French setting allowed diamonds to be spaced closer together so that the line of stones would appear continuous.

With the introduction of the “French” technique in engagement rings, other pieces of jewelry, such as earrings, necklaces, and bracelets could now have a seamless surface of sparkle via French set diamonds.

The emphasis on luxury also meant that jewelry needed to be crafted with the finest materials.  So… it should come as no surprise that platinum became all the rage during this era. Its polished shiny surface further enhanced the brilliance of each stone, making the finished piece of jewelry practically luminous.
